児島善三郎の風景画  FLAT & So DEEP 画家と大自然との水平的交流
 
昨年10月には郷里博多の福岡県立美術館で児島善三郎生誕130年の記念展を開催して頂きました。
久しぶりに各時代の代表作の数々が一堂に集まり善三郎芸術の全貌を見ることができました。
ここ数年は海外での評価や収集も高まり驚いているところですが、
世界に類を見ない画風や表現に、なるほどと思わずにはいられないところもあります。
今のところ、香港のオークションなどでは綺麗な晩年の瓶花の作品の人気が高いですが、
昨年ロンドンで開かれたアートフェア、フリーズマスターズの特別ブースでの展示では
代々木時代や国分寺時代の風景画に人気が集まり、滞欧作の裸婦も含め何点もの成約が実現しました。
海外でそんなに有名なわけではないのに、絵の力だけで鑑識眼の高い人々を惹きつける魅力は
なんなのだろうかと改めて考えさせられました。
画家本人も繰り返し言っていたように、日本の絵画の良さは平面性にあるのだが
当然ながら立体感や重量感に欠けるといった問題の解決を、
嵐に一人立ち向かうような覚悟で必死に努力し続けた末に会得した善三郎様式が、
今、時機を得て世界の人々に理解されるようになったのではないかと思うことにしました。
それは、相反する概念、“FLAT&DEEP”平面的なのに深みがある、
日本的キュビスムとでも言うべき善三郎マジックなのです。

Landscape of Zenzaburo KOJIMA ‘FLAT & DEEP’ – Interaction with nature on the same horizon
 
In October last year, the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art in Zenzaburo Kojima’s hometown of Hakata held the exhibition commemorating the 130th anniversary of the artist’s birth. For the first time since the last retrospective exhibition, a number of his representative paintings from each period were brought together to show a full view of Kojima art.
It is a pleasant surprise that the artist’s international recognition and sales have been growing over the last few years, but it is convincing given that his style and expression is incomparable in the world.
At the moment, paintings of flowers in vase from his later life tend to be well received at auctions in Hong Kong and elsewhere, but at the solo exhibition in the Frieze Masters in London last year, landscapes from Yoyogi and Kokubunji period as well as nude from his stay in Europe attracted popularity to lead to sales. It made me wonder what is about the power of his paintings that attracts people with highly discerning eyes, even though the artist is not such famous abroad.
As the artist himself repeatedly said, the beauty of Japanese painting lies in its flatness, but it therefore lacks a three-dimensionality and a massive feeling. To overcome the problem, he kept trying his hardest like facing a storm alone, then finally acquired his own ‘flat and deep’ Zenzaburo Style. I came to the conclusion that, at last, the style has come to be understood by people around the world.
Conflicting concepts of flat and deep can exist in a painting, which is the artist’s magic that could be called Japanese cubism.
