Daito Kokushi “None” (Mu/無)
Filmmaker Koichi Nagura has created a beautiful short video featuring “None” (Mu/無), a calligraphic work by the Zen monk Daito Kokushi (Shuho Myocho 1283-1338), currently on display at the exhibition “Jomon Shower Lab. Ⅶ.”

In this video, you can experience the flawless brush strokes, the texture of the paper that has aged over 700 years, the richness of the ink, and even the individual threads of the hyogu (mounting). Enjoy it with the sound by La Monte Young, a master of contemporary music.

In Zen Buddhism, 無 (Mu) means “none” or “no.” And sometimes it is translated as the state of “nothingness.” It challenges logical, dualistic thinking, and points to direct experience beyond words or concepts.
