この度、丘の上APT／兒嶋画廊は 「The Textiles of India」 展と題して、
洋画家児島善三郎旧蔵のインド染織品および、兒嶋画廊コレクションを展示いたします。
We are pleased to present “The Textiles of India” featuring the collection of Zenzaburo Kojima (painter 1893-1962) and Gallery Kojima.

「児島善三郎が愛蔵した印度染織品と描かれた作品」
児島善三郎は、国分寺時代後期（1950年頃）から晩年にかけて、
静物画や花の絵を描く為に中国や韓国の陶磁器の花瓶や、
キリム、印度更紗、ヨーロッパの綴織等を収集し、
それらを作品の中に大胆に取り入れ、独特の美しい色彩と相まって
鮮烈で華やかな作品を多く残し人々を魅了しました。
花を描いた作品においては、テーブルに敷かれた布のストライプの斜線や背景に描かれた花柄の模様が
反発力やイリュージョンを生み出し、平面的に見える画面の中に強力な立体感を与えています。
それらの布達は善三郎マジックの重要な助っ人となりました。
画家を目指していた三男の輝郎には、仕事として手描更紗の染色を勧めたほどです。
現在、京都の細見美術館で5月9日まで開催されている 「日本の色 吉岡幸雄の仕事と蒐集」で
展示されている赤星家伝来の古渡印度更紗裂帳も善三郎の旧蔵品で今尚、貴重な染織資料です。
From Zenzaburo Kojima’s later time in Kokubunji around 1950s until the later period of his life,
for making still life paintings such as flowers he collected Chinese and Korean porcelain and pottery vases,
kilim, Indian sarasa, European handcraft tapestries and others.
Kojima dauntlessly incorporated his textile collections into his paintings.
His dynamic and vibrant works, accompanied by unusual and bright palette, have deeply enthralled many.
For instance, in paintings that feature flowers, in contrast with the subject flower in the front,
the stripes on the table clothes and the floral patterns in the background form an interesting tension and an visual illusion,
providing the two-dimensional painting with a powerful stereoscopic effect.
It is no exaggeration to say that these textiles are crucial to the “magic” of Kojima.
Kojima even recommended his third-son, Teruo, who aimed becoming a painter,
making Japanese sarasa (printed cotton or chintz) as his real profession.
This again reveals the significance of textile arts to Kojima.
